So many stories unavoidably lead me to see my children as the face of the characters I journey with. When I read any children’s book I wait for it to whisper to me, which of my readers needs this particular story first, I am always searching for connections. These journeys have been insightful, candid, painful, funny and representative of many of the lives of the children I serve. Renée Watson’s Some Places More Than Others offers it all.Īmara’s story – what it accomplishes for middle grade readersĢ019 has taken me on many middle grade realistic fiction journeys. Rarely have I encountered a book crafted to offer a story that engages middle grade readers, offers sage wisdom for adults who wish to empower these readers, and also lays out a flexible, yet easy to implement, plan for project based learning that can be experienced in the classroom or at home.

And that Martian atmosphere is definitely no fun, lacking stuff like, oh, breathable air, and a reasonable range of temperature. Supplies on hand were only meant to cover a few weeks, maybe months. Dude missed his ride and there will not be another along for, oh, four years. Astronaut Mark Watney is definitely more screwed than most of us have ever been. These are the opening words of The Martian. How many have said them at least twice? Three times? Four? Those with hands still up, you probably need to make some adjustments to your approach, find a safer line of work, hobbies that do not entail long drops, stop trying the weekly specials at McBlowfish, or seek out people to date who are into less extreme…um…sports. Not everyone? I see we have some liars out there. How many of you have uttered these exact words? (or words to that effect). I’m pretty much fucked.Ok, show of hands. An extensive introduction sets the parameters for the commentaries, giving a description of commedia dell'arte as a phenomenon, explaining the categories of masked characters, and describing the nature and structure of the genre. Andrews points out similarities between the scenarios, borrowings from earlier Italian scripted comedies, analogies with other early modern drama including Shakespeare, and the re-use of these components by later dramatists such as Moliere and Goldoni. Taking into consideration previous translations of the work, Richard Andrews's English translation and lengthy analytic commentary of the scenarios provide an overview of the commedia dell'arte style, describing how actors fleshed out scenes by inserting existing material from their repertoire into a plot framework and demonstrating a constant interchange of plot, characterization, and scene structure that moved between scripted and improvised comedy. Thirty of Scala's 50 scenarios are included, complete with a detailed scene-by-scene analysis that demonstrates the methodology of Italian improvised theatre in the early modern period for the purposes of study as well as re-creation. The Commedia dell'Arte of Flaminio Scala presents a translation and commentary of selected scenarios composed or collected by the actor-manager Flaminio Scala that were first published in 1611. This is an engrossing and powerful exploration of one of the most intriguing political stories of our time - telling us as much about one young woman's ascendancy as it does about the country that elected her. But why was having a baby so meaningful, and what does it say about the continued struggle for gender equality? In its aftermath, Ardern has become a global icon for her strength and decisiveness while uniting a country in shock and mourning.Īrdern attracted international headlines for being the second world leader to give birth while in office. About The BookThe Immortals of Meluha, available in paperback, is a story revolving around Lord Shiva, but portrays him as a human, who becomes God only. 1900 BC in what modern Indians call the Indus Valley Civilization and the inhabitants called the land of Meluha: a near-perfect empire created many centuries earlier by Lord Ram-one of the greatest monarchs that ever lived-faces peril as its primary river, the Saraswati, is slowly drying to exctinction. Tripathi devoted years to the research of Hindu mythological stories and history, and discussions with his family about the destiny of the human body, mind and soul to create this sweeping and fascinating adaptation of ancient Hindu mythology for modern fantasy readers. Called "archetypal and stirring" by Deepak Chopra, The Immortals of Meluha heralds an exciting new wave of fantasy writing inspired by the ancient civilizations of the East. The immortals of Meluha written by Amish tripathi is a wonderful book about how a warrior’s karma made him the god. Sex as a theme is almost inescapable though. Due to the length and complexity of this piece, any one of these themes, and more, could be said to be the most important in this poem. The latter also connects to sisterhood and companionship. The primary themes at work in ‘Goblin Market’ are sex, temptation/sin, and women/femininity. They learned their lesson from the Goblin Market. The poem concludes with the poet informing the readers that the two sisters each got married and had children. Lizzie’s sacrificial nature is often compared to Christ in these last lines. Lizzie shows far more strength than Laura and finds a way to return her to her youth and beauty. Laura wastes away pining after the fruit. She demands more but the goblin refuses to give it to her. Once she eats it, Laura becomes immediately addicted to the taste. But, Laura ignores this warning and pays for one fruit with a lock of her hair. These fruits are inherently magical, something that Lizzie, the wiser sister, knows they should stay away from. In the first lines of ‘Goblin Market,’ the poet describes the calls and cries of the goblin men as they try to attract customers to buy their fruits. ‘ Goblin Market’ by Christina Rossetti describes the adventures of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, and their encounter with goblin merchants. The sequel will focus on Lucius (Paul), the son of Conie’s Lucilla and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin). The "hippo" of the title (occasionally referred to as "the happy hippo" and given to wallowing in long baths) is Edward (Ted/Tedward) Lennox Wallace, an aging, lecherous, one-time hell-raising poet, reduced by diminishing poetic talent to working as a theatre critic. (Hence cover designs picturing an actual hippopotamus or Fry himself in a bathtub.) The title and epigraph imply as well one of the novel's themes: the practicality of poetry and how that helps Wallace, a poet, regard the "miracles" in the story with a sceptical eye. The title draws comparisons between the animal as described in the poem and the main character, Ted Wallace, a slovenly man who enjoys long baths. Eliot, whose first verse is quoted as the epigraph: The novel's title comes from the poem of the same name by T. Wallace is an alcoholic washed-up poet and theatre critic who, having been fired from his newspaper job, accepts a lucrative commission from his terminally ill goddaughter to investigate rumours of miracle healings at Swafford Hall, country mansion of Wallace's old friend Lord Logan. Written in part as an epistolary novel, it is largely narrated by the main character Edward "Ted" Wallace. The Hippopotamus (1994) is a comic novel by Stephen Fry. And those last pages left me with chills. Definitely worth reading - as long you like reading into the night!''Clever would be an understatement. _Readers are obsessed with The Family Upstairs:'Hooked from page one''I totally adored this book. Who has been looking after the baby? And where did they go?Two entangled families. Close to them is a hastily scrawled note. In the kitchen lie three decomposing corpses. Well-fed and cared for, she is happily waiting for someone to pick her up. I couldn't bear for it to finish.' OLIVIA COLMAN_In a large house in London's fashionable Chelsea, a baby is awake in her cot. FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF INVISIBLE GIRLOne of Holly Willoughby's summer reading highlights!'I loved The Family Upstairs!' SARAH JESSICA PARKER'I read it all in one sitting.' COLLEEN HOOVER'I genuinely struggled to put this one down.' THE UNMUMSY MUM'A twisty and engrossing story of betrayal and redemption.' IAN RANKIN'Rich, dark and intricately twisted, this enthralling whodunnit mixes family saga with domestic noir to brilliantly chilling effect.' RUTH WARE'Really good, gripping. Just a note, the humans the mice live with are very crude, and their house is stomach-turningly messy. In fact, I was pleased with the healthy conclusion the book came to-respect and care for all of God’s creation-and I appreciated how it made me think. In both cases, to my great relief, neither got too political. There was also the issue of diversity-Hailey having atypically white blonde hair, and Obadiah being a very blue mouse. This book did touch on the ethics (or lack thereof) of certain types of lab experiments on animals. Also, Obadiah had some pretty clever strategies! Smart mouse. Hailey was also a neat character, and their friendship proved to be helpful to both of them. I enjoyed his adventures with his new family and his quest to free his old one. The story was actually almost like Stuart Little meets Mrs. This ended up being a really cute book with an important message. I originally picked this book up because I recognized the illustrator and was interested in seeing more of his illustrations. |
